2)Free National Roaming on BSNL from June 15, Says IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad: The state-run telecom Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will offer free national roaming from June 15, Union minister for Communications Ravi Shankar Prasad said today.

Spectrum sharing and trading policy to go to Cabinet this month and full mobile portability will be given from July, he added. The minister was briefing the media today regarding the achievements of his ministry as part of the programmes to mark the Narendra Modi government’s first year in office.Ever since it came to power, the NDA government has promised free roaming. It was also promised by its predecessor, the UPA government.

Earlier this year, Vodafone and Reliance announced plans to reduce the roaming charges to a minimum. The BSNL was expected to introduce plans for free roaming in January.

In May, BSNL had slashed roaming tariff by up to 40% for its prepaid and postpaid mobile connection following a telecom tariff order issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

The minister said both state-run operators – BSNL and the MTNL – have been showing losses.

In 2004, BSNL showed a profit of Rs. 10,000 crore, the minister said. “In 2014, when I took charge, BSNL showed a loss of Rs. 7,500 crore. The MTNL was in profit till 2008, when I took charge… it showed losses.” But he said MTNL is now on the mend.

Good governance, the minister said, became a casualty “as far as these PSUs are concerned,” and those sitting in Sanchar bhavan will have to “apportion blame”. A news from NDTV.

Center keen on reviving BSNL, MTNL: A year in office, the Modi government is keen to revive state-owned enterprises BSNL and MTNL, even as they face stiff competition from private players.

BSNL that operates across the country including in remote areas, had posted a profit of Rs 10, 000 crore when the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government left office in 2004, but “when we returned to government in 2014, it was suffering from a loss of Rs 7020 crore,” Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told TOI.

According to the minister, the case of MTNL is all the more curious. “It was in profit till 2008-2009, but in 2014, it had a debt of Rs 16,000 crore.” MTNL operates in Delhi and Mumbai only. “Someone, somewhere will have to take responsibility and accountability as to which were the forces and patronised by whom, responsible for creating a mess,” Prasad said adding that “revival of BSNL and MTNL are priority concerns”. The recruitment procedure of E5 (2012) for Sr. Manager , for which competitive exam was held on 04.03.2012 has been scrapped on 16.04.2015 by corporate office.

Our association was against this recruitment of E5 since beginning. TEAM wrote various letters to Hon’ble CMD MTNL regarding many discrepancies in the recruitment procedure. Our prediction has become reality and corporate office was left with no alternate except to scrap the procedure.

MTNL corporate office has cancelled the notification under which the so called competitive examination promotion to E5 grade was held. Even those candidates who are not eligible for taking part in this examination were allowed to appear in this examination illegally. TEAM strongly took up this issue and brought the malafide  nexus on the surface. As a result of this , the so called examination and its notification stand cancelled.

WhatsApp’s wake-up call to MTNL, BSNL:Last week came the news that WhatsApp, the popular group messaging service acquired by Facebook, is testing a voice-calling feature for Android users and is set to widen its scope to others.

Last week came another study from Nokia Networks that said India’s mobile Internet usage growth peaked at 74% in 2014, with 52% from 3G services. A news from Hindusatn Times.

1)BSNL, MTNL may scrap BlackBerry services over losses: State-run telecom operators BSNL and MTNL may  scrap their BlackBerry services as they are incurring losses and are in no position to spend on the software to provide interception services to intelligence agencies.Unlike private telcos, the two do not have a high subscriber base, particularly of enterprises using BlackBerry services, so stoppage is not going to be of major inconvenience to anyone.

Naresh Kumar Gupta, director (consumer fixed access) at BSNL, told FE: “We are trying to see if Blackberry mobile services makes a business case for us. We are weighing the pros and cons. A service may not be making a business case for us but we can continue to offer such services despite losses given the brand it carries. But there is definitely a loss. Whether the loss outweighs the brand (BlackBerry) or whether the brand outweighs losses, that is being examined”. A news from financial Express.

2)Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) has informed the telecom department it is keen to sell a 50% stake in wholly-owned unit Millennium Telecom (MTL) to Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) to create an equally-owned joint venture for delivering citizens’ services as part of the Narendra Modi government’s Digital India initiative.

The proposal is aimed at unlocking cost-efficiencies since Millennium Telecom will have a negligible licence fee payout obligation to the government as it’s not a licensed telecom operator. MTNL or BSNL will have to fork out 8% of annual revenue generated from the Digital India project as licence fees if either of them participates directly .  An article from times of India.

And now, they will have to cough up more money. Telcos have lost a differential tariff case dating back to 2008 at the Supreme Court, reports CNBC-TV18’s Ashmit Kumar. The private telcos charged higher for calls to BSNL, MTNL   customers in states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. However, calling the move as arbitrary, the apex court said that customers cannot be differentiated based on call origination.
